Yesterday, appropriately enough, is celebrated as “Look Up In the Sky Day”. Someone clearly made up this holiday, but it is a great reminder to take some time to gaze up into the sky, realize how big the universe truly is and our small part in it, and it’s a great way to momentarily breathe and relax.
Tonight, however, is really a great chance to look up in the sky and observe something special. Most of North America should be able to take in a total lunar eclipse tonight. And, what better place to do that than from the peace and quiet of your own hot tub or swim spa?
What causes a total lunar eclipse? The moon periodically passes completely through Earth’s shadow, or “Umbra”. Leading up to the eclipse, the moon gradually darkens, eventually taking on a rusty/blood red color.
This year’s lunar eclipse should be easily viewable from our area (cross your fingers for a clear night!). While the official beginning of the eclipse will be around 10 p.m. our time, between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m. should afford the best eclipse views. The peak of the event is slated for 12:46 a.m.
One of the great things about owning a hot tub or swim spa is retreating to either during the late evening hours to float, relax, escape, and take it terrific celestial events like this. If you happen to take in this year’s lunar eclipse, snap a few shots on your cell and send them to us! We’d love to see them.
