Infrared sauna benefits may be helpful with cardiovascular issues

Infrared sauna use can be good for your entire body, and studies show that it could have great benefits for your cardiovascular health. Many medical journals have reported on studies using infrared sauna therapy to address the symptoms of congestive heart failure, arrhythmia and more.

The results of one such study were reported in the Journal of Cardiac Failure in 2005. In the study, infrared sauna therapy was used with patients who had systolic congestive heart failure. This condition inhibits the heart’s ability to pump blood properly, minimizing blood flow to the body’s vital organs.

Fifteen hospitalized patients in Japan were selected to participate in the study. Each used infrared sauna therapy on a daily basis for four weeks. The temperature of the sauna session was set at about 140 degrees Fahrenheit. After the four week period, thirteen of the fifteen patients had lowered their blood pressure and increased their exercise tolerance. The blood flow through the heart had significantly increased, and the oxygen production increased as well.

(An interesting side note: Did you know that Asian cultures have been using infrared therapies for over a century?)

Another study conducted in 2009 studied the effects of infrared sauna use on individuals with arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat). Over thirty patients were included in the study, some using infrared saunas for fifteen minute sessions each day for two weeks. At the end of the two week window, the patients who used infrared saunas experienced a marked decrease in abnormal heart rates over a 24-hour period. The number of premature ventricular contractions in these patients dropped down over 30% (about 900 abnormal beats) compared to those not using the saunas (over 3,000 abnormal beats)! The results of this study were published in the Journal of Cardiology.

Yet other studies have been done to study infrared sauna use as a therapy for other cardiovascular issues. In nearly every case, positive results were reported. It’s also proven to be a safe and enjoyable way to help decrease factors for stroke, heart attack, and atherosclerosis.
